On the port and starboard sides of the Instrument Module are thermal louvers designed to control the internal temperature of the spacecraft. Since TOPEX/Poseidon instrumentation has a total power requirement of approximately 1000 watts during normal operation, a substantial amount of excess heat is generated. One effective method of removing this heat is to simply radiate it into space.
